Below are readings of chapters and interviews from "The Footless Girls of Camp C" by Shows Leary

11/30/24. John Cehowski singing If We Could Only

This is a follow up post to last Saturday’s Moon and River cafe performance by John Cehowski and Arya Chowdhury. The guys were kind enough to play “If We Could Only”, which is a song penned and scored by John and used at the end of The Footless Girls Of Camp C audiobook version that is available on Audible, Google Play, Nook, Storytel, Kobo Walmart, Libro.FM,  and Audiobooks.com and soon on all other Spotify Findaway Voices Platforms.

The audio version contains the lyrics with keyboard and violin back up. This is a slightly different version being played by two guitars. Nonetheless it is still a poignant song and perfectly captures the tenor of the end of the book. Grab a tissue and hit play.

11/9/24. Joel Patterson at Author's Appreciation Event.

Joel provided insight into how the audiobook came to fruition. He demonstrated his Digital Audio Workshop on his laptop and spoke about the various sound effects and musical aspects found only in the audiobook. Find Joel at www.joelpatterson.us

11/9/24 Deena Chappell at Author's Event.

Deena spoke about how she and Shows met and how they came to work on the book together. Deena is the editor and was key in smoothing out rough sections and keeping the grammar and articulation on course. This was especially challenging as there are many speaking characters and they all have their unique dialects and language.

11/9/24. Shows speaking at the author's appreciation event.

Shows made a brief reading from chapter one, the story of when he learned to “crook a deer”, as a young boy on his first hunting trip.

11/9/24. John Cehowskii at Author's Appreciation Event.

John gave a detailing of how he and Shows met and became musical friends. Shows overheard an original song by John with content that relates to one of the book’s tenets. John was kind enough to not only allow use of the song for the audiobook but he performed the song in the recording studio and made the book’s ending even better.

9/1/24. Book reading SPAM and mission food

When you are deep in the bush on a mission of life and death there are two main things you think of, even dwell on, your weapons and your food….or more precisely, your lack of food in general and the lack of variety in your food.

Tonight I want to explore and discuss food. Our team had to carry all of our food for this month-long mission. We did have two supply drops where our food stash was replenished. By supply drop I mean wooden crates that had been low altitude parachuted into the jungle and located on our map for retrieval. We, and by we I mean me, had to find these needles in a haystack. The crates were about the size of coffins, a reminder I suppose, and were packed with ammo, food, various types of clothing, water, medical gear and body bags.

My main focus in this reading is about my complex, love hate relationship with of all things….SPAM. I hated Spam when we began but I forced myself to accept that I would be eating a lot of it along with Pop Tarts, which though I likes…toasted anyways, I eventually lost my taste for them.

Why spam and pop tarts?------protein, fats and carbohydrates…a balanced meal….in the jungle anyway.

The following cuts from the book are sequential, which demonstrates how I evolved in regards to Spam. Disregard the lack of some context.
